Creating a New Report from Scratch

It is usually preferable to make a copy of an existing report rather than creating one from scratch. See Creating a Copy of an Existing Report for more information. However, it is possible to create one from scratch as follows.

>> To create a new report called ‘MyNewReport’

1.Create a file called "MyNewReport.txt" and enter the required source text

2.Create a file called "MyNewReport.swp" and enter the required items

The Project file ("MyNewReport.swp") is best created in Solar Writer’s main folder, and the Source file ( "MyNewReport.txt") is best created in the SOURCE subfolder under Solar Writer’s main folder, although the Source file can be anywhere, as long as you enter it's full path in the "MyNewReport.swp" file.

See Input File Layout for an explanation of the source text file requirements, and Solar Writer Project Files for an explanation of the "*.swp" file layout.

Even if you are going to create your own report rather than copy an existing one, it is probably easier if you first read through the help on copying an existing report first (Creating a Copy of an Existing Report), as that contains very useful information about the report files involved and how they work. Also, if you haven't already, see Editing and Creating Source Text for an overview of the Solar Writer report system.
